We have two lives, and the second begins when we realize we only have one.” ― Confucius : quoteporn

Why are you here?

I heard the quote I posted above from Naval Ravikant on a Podcast (He’s awesome – should definitely check him out) and thought it would be a great starting point for our journey here together on this website/blog/whatever the hell this is. “We have but two lives, and the second begins when we realize we only have one.”

90% of the world are on our first lives. We do what is accepted by society and what our parents teach us from when we are young, and we roll with it. We don’t question it or look to alternatives.

We do complain though, a lot.

Data Time:

  • You will work (on average) 90,000 Hours of your life at your Job
  • You will usually work 35 Years Full-Time
  • This Equals 1/3 (33%) of your waking life

Tell me if this sounds familiar (it will):

Do well in school, get a respectable degree (with debt), graduate with some fraction of mental stability we call “being an adult” and begin an entry-level job.

You work there from 9 AM to 5 PM every day for five out of seven days each week. You then do this and tuck a little money away in a 401k – that you can’t touch- until you turn 60 years old. You then hopefully go on a trip or two each year but are really waiting until you “Retire” to LIVE.

Whew – that’s one hell of a third of a lifetime.

So what about the 35 years you just spent working though?

Oh….and while you’re not working…..you have to fit LIFE into those remaining hours.

Family…..friends…..children……marriage…..hobbies….passions….all crammed into the remaining 30% of your day you have left, fueled by caffeine.

I’m not trying to force you to “swallow the red pill” and wake up in the Matrix with me. I only want to present an Alternative…which is the basis of this page, and the beginning of your second life.

What if we could be intentional? What if we could save a little more, plan a little more, LIVE a little more? What if we enjoyed the journey along the way to the light at the end of the tunnel? This is the concept of Financial Independence – in a nutshell (Mr. Money Mustache Blog is a great resource for this).

The idea is to live below your means (Even if just 30-40%) to where you don’t have the NEED to work, and only do work you love because you WANT to. It means spending more time being a better spouse, a better friend, a better parent, a better son/daughter, a better human…..instead of being a better worker. It means spending more time doing WHAT FIRES YOU UP – and for me, that’s Traveling the world.

BOOM! Now we are here! DontDelayLife.org.

A travel website that’s less about the filters and more about the focus. Let’s figure out how to live, together. Each week we will talk on different subjects (Obviously including travel too) that will move the needle towards you living your best life (and me too). My next post will be about the concept of travel itself and how it ties into this post tonight.

Let’s do the damn thing. Welcome to DontDelayLife.
